Breweries of Cornwall

BeerPeople in Cornwall are known for enjoying a tipple, and the UK as a whole is known for its excellent microbreweries that are littered around the country. In Cornwall, some excellent brews are available from these breweries, and each one even has extra activities for those who make the effort to go and visit them. They also, of course, supply beer to numerous pubs throughout Cornwall, so you don’t have to visit the breweries themselves to enjoy their products. Without further ado, let’s examine some of the brewery’s you could visited on a Cornish caravan holiday.

The first brewery is Skinners based in Truro. Like many other breweries around the country, Skinners put out seasonal ales, including the Christmas Fairy and Jingle Knocker ales. There’s also the Hunny Bunny at Christmas. Cornish Knocker is one of the ones most frequently found in pubs, but it’s worth seeking out others. Some are even named after some of Cornwall’s biggest attractions, such as the Heligan Honey brew. If you travel to the brewery itself, tours are available.

Second is Sharps, who are probably better known than Skinners, and are based in Rock. The brewery has a shop, allowing you to purchase their beer directly from them, possibly eliminating the pub mark-up and aiding you on your quest for a cheap family holiday. The beers produced here can be found further than just Cornwall, often turning up in Devon pubs that are close to the border. Doombar is my personal favourite of the Sharp’s range, and is the most popular judging by how many places sell it. The others in the range are not to be overlooked though, and whilst the total number of beers produced by Sharps may be smaller than other breweries, the quality is not to be overlooked. Definitely worth a visit.

St Austell Brewery is easily the biggest of the three, and their cask beers can be found throughout the UK with Tribute leading the charge. A huge choice of cask, bottled and seasonal beers make St Austell Brewery almost unavoidable, especially when you’re in Cornwall. Just as well they’re high-quality drinks then, eh?

With excellent food and attractions also found in Cornwall, the addition of excellent drink turns what would otherwise be a good holiday into a great one.
